Balancing Risks and Benefits…

Balancing risk and benefits is a summary of the key approaches to understanding how to assess the risks and hazards, and articulate the benefits for children. It’s written for those taking children outdoors anywhere in the world, with reference to some of the key evidence as to why this is the right approach.

If we refused to take any risks we wouldn’t get up in the morning… Our job as educators is to challenge children. This booklet will help you make the most of those opportunities and includes a template form for you to use and adapt.

This book is written by Tim Gill, one of the world’s leading experts on childhood and risk, and will help you plan for taking children outdoors on Outdoor Classroom Day and all year round.

If you are looking for more practical guidance, take a look at the UK Play Safety Forum’s Managing Risk in Play Provision: Implementation Guide. If you have other guidance documents please do share them!
