Where the forest is the school’s playground

10th October 2017

Chirag School in Uttarakhand India is an exemplary rural school where the forest is the school’s playground. This amazing school is located in the central Himalayan village of Odakhan. It is founded on the principles of nature based outdoor learning and play where the school community walks the talk on sustainable development and children learn every day from their natural outdoors.

Almost every lesson is taught outside in the many outdoor spaces spread across the hilly terrain and the forest surrounding the school.

Children actively use the school outdoors for play every day. Cultural activities too happen outdoors in the many outdoor settings of the school.

The school was designed with a lot of love following an inclusive process managed by the NGO Chirag and led by the architects from KCA in which people from three nearby villages participated. The school consciously created many outdoor classrooms and those near the preschool could be accessed by climbing out of windows! No wonder the preschoolers hate growing up here and leaving their playful building!
